The Stories of Guthrie

The Guthries

Our History

The Guthrie Clan, one of the oldest families in Angus, Scotland, takes its name from the ancient lands of Guthrie, with roots reaching back to at least the 12th century. Legend tells of a fisherman who "gut three" fish for a hungry king, though the true origin remains shrouded in time. In 1178, King William the Lion granted the lands to Arbroath Abbey; the Guthries later purchased them, serving loyally as royal falconers.

The clan wove itself into Scotland’s history: in 1299, the Laird of Guthrie travelled to France to summon William Wallace home. Sir David Guthrie rose to become Lord Treasurer and Chief Justice, building Guthrie Castle in 1468. The Guthries fought and fell at Flodden in 1513 and survived a bitter feud with the Gardynes. In the 17th century, Bishop John Guthrie and Covenanter martyr James Guthrie left their mark on turbulent times.

In more recent times, Lieutenant Colonel Ivan Guthrie of Guthrie, a distinguished soldier awarded the Military Cross and commander of the 4th Battalion of the Black Watch, served as the 20th Clan Chief. His daughter, Moyra Guthrie, succeeded him as the 21st Clan Chief, proudly carrying the family legacy forward to the present generation. Alexander Bedini Guthrie, who became the 22nd Clan Chief, continued this proud tradition until his untimely death from Covid-19 in 2020.

Now, the family of the Clan Chief are united in purpose and guided by tradition — is working together to bring you the Guthrie Heritage and ensure it is preserved and shared for generations to come.

— The Guthrie's Worldwide

The “Guthrie “surname “has its origins from one small area of Scotland. That area is the county of Angus, Scotland. Guthrie heritage dates back over a thousand years and there are only 14 different DNA strains worldwide. So if you live in Australia, Canada, South Africa, New Zealand or the U.S.  We all come from the same small area of Scotland. The Clan having no septs makes us a true family. This is why we all call one another cousins.  This makes the Guthrie Church ALL of ours “The Family Church”.
